The SPSLink Go and Trek can carry calls over Wi-Fi as well as 4G LTE. That matters where cell signal is weak or absent: a remote camp with a Starlink Mini, a warehouse with poor coverage, a vessel with onboard Wi-Fi. Once a network is saved the radio reconnects to it automatically. The Commander is 4G LTE only and does not join Wi-Fi.
Join a network
- Press Menu and scroll to Wi-Fi (Settings > Wi-Fi on some firmware).
- Turn Wi-Fi on. The radio lists the networks it can see.
- Select your network and enter the password with the Up/Down keys, then confirm.
- When the Wi-Fi icon appears on the status bar the radio is connected and calls now travel over Wi-Fi.
Using a Starlink Mini
A Starlink Mini has its own Wi-Fi network. Power the Mini, wait for it to acquire the satellite, then join its network from the radio exactly as above. Everyone on site can share one Mini. Give the Mini a clear view of the sky and keep the radios within its Wi-Fi range (roughly the size of a small building; add a Wi-Fi extender for larger sites).
Good to know
- The radio prefers Wi-Fi when it is connected and falls back to 4G LTE when it is not, so leave Wi-Fi on.
- Captive portal networks (hotel or airport Wi-Fi that needs a web login) will not work; the radio has no browser.
- Wi-Fi calling works on every plan and does not use your plan's cellular coverage.
- To forget a network, open it in the Wi-Fi list and choose Forget or Delete.
